Introduction
After six months of using the Tractyl ManuForm keyboard and identifying its shortcomings, I decided to build another one. This time, I wanted a wireless keyboard with a 5x3 layout. I chose the Corne V3 Wireless as the base and paired it with the Logitech Ergo M575 mouse.
Challenges with My Tractyl ManuForm
The Tractyl ManuForm had several drawbacks:
- Too bulky for transport: It was difficult to carry around.
- Unnecessary dedicated number row: This could have been addressed with a layer, but I ultimately decided against it.
- Cables: Managing the wires was inconvenient.
- Keys too far apart.
- Hand-wired construction: While satisfying, it was time-consuming.
Features of My New Build
The new keyboard meets my primary requirements:
- Wireless connectivity
- 5x3 layout
I also made some adjustments based on my previous experience:
- Removed the dedicated CMD
and ALT
keys.
- Added a "home row" remap for the DF
and JK
keys with long presses.
Build Process
To simplify things, I purchased a kit from AliExpress that included everything needed except the switches. I reused some Cherry MX switches from my previous build.
After some quick research and printing the case, I ended up with a sleek, minimalist keyboard that exceeded my
expectations. For the firmware, I chose ZMK. After using it for a while, I realized I didn't need dedicated CMD
and ALT
keys. Instead, I remapped the DF
and JK
keys to serve this purpose upon long presses.
